Alumni Spotlight: Franklin Cameron ‘05

Franklin Cameron ‘05 says being editor-in-chief of The York School’s student newspaper in Grade 10 gave him a valuable introduction to journalism that “played out in a professional setting” years later.
When he was a manager in the newsroom at BNN Bloomberg, he often thought about the practical experience he’d gained as a student journalist. Under the guidance of Ms. (Fiona) Marshall, the newspaper’s teacher advisor, Franklin learned how to identify, prioritize and cover stories that would engage readers.

When reflecting on the IB education he received at York, Franklin identifies a number of ways the school set him up for success in university and his career. His teachers helped him develop the critical thinking skills he relies on today. “I learned to think for myself and ask ‘Is this a legitimate source of news? Who is saying it? Can this information be corroborated?’” he explains. The IB program, coupled with having classmates from a variety of countries, also broadened Franklin's global perspective on current events and issues.

After York, Franklin completed a Honours Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto, where he majored in History and did a double minor in Political Science and English. He spent two summers researching stocks as an intern at a hedge fund and landed a job at BNN Bloomberg when he graduated. Franklin discovered that he loved the “interesting, exciting, fast-paced, fun and stressful” world of live financial news. After a series of promotions at BNN Bloomberg, he was responsible for producing a morning show called “The Open with Amber Kanwar and Jon Erlichman”, a role that required him to pivot quickly if a world event caused the stock markets to fluctuate overnight.

At the end of 2021, Franklin accepted a new position at TD Bank. Each weekday he produces a 45-minute program called “MoneyTalk Live” that airs on TD’s WebBroker trading platform and on TD Direct Investing’s YouTube page. The goal of the webcast is to educate clients about investing by featuring news, market analysis and advice related to personal finances.

Franklin has fond memories of his York days and treasures the lasting friendships he made in Middle and Senior School. “York was a great place to learn and grow as a person. It’s a school where teachers have a personal connection with you and really care about your education. I’m lucky enough to have excellent friendships that have stood the test of time. We’ve grown up together and it’s fun to reminisce about York,” he says.
