The York School is a not-for-profit corporation led by a Board of Directors that oversees the strategic direction of the School. The Board is composed of parents, alumni parents, alumni and other community members who bring expertise from a number of disciplines relevant to the effective governance of the school.
One of the Board’s primary responsibilities is to hire the Head of School who works with the Board to establish and articulate the strategic direction required to achieve the School’s vision and priorities. These plans are then executed by the Head with the support of the School’s leadership team and the faculty.
The Board also approves the annual operating budget, which is created based on the current funding priorities. This includes approving decisions about tuition increases, external revenue sources and major fundraising or building initiatives. The Board’s emphasis is on sustainability and stability: its decisions secure and promote long-term interests so that the children of our current students will be able to attend The York School in the future.
The Board includes 18 Directors who are appointed by the members of the corporation for a three-year term.
The Board of Directors is supported by a number of committees, made up of Board members, staff and other volunteers, who provide guidance in key areas. A York School Board committee is a group of people that works together on a specific topic or question and reports back to the board with recommendations. The current standing committees of the Board include Governance, Finance, Risk, Premises and Advancement. Any combination of board members, staff members, and volunteers can make up a board committee.
