Overall, the U14 boys had a successful game day, coming away with a win against TFS and then competing in a very tight 12 to 6 game against UCC. The boys showed that they are quick learners and very adaptive, especially considering how simple we kept the system and how quickly they were able to apply the concepts.
-- One of the biggest positives was how well the boys adapted to our defensive structure. We stayed primarily in Cover 2 zone, emphasizing staying within their assigned area, watching who entered their zone, and allowing the play to develop toward them rather than chasing. The boys made some strong adjustments, which led to several interceptions and important turnovers.
-- On offense, Pearson was effective with his passing and made some very good throws throughout the games. As we continue developing, the next step is getting the ball out a little quicker on our quick hitting concepts, while the rest of the group continues working together to create separation and find ways to make plays.
-- There were also some simple execution details that could have changed the outcome of several plays. Securing the catch, extending the football after the catch to gain additional yards, and finishing plays near the goal line are small details that can make a major difference as the season continues.
-- We also noticed that several players were competing in running shoes rather than cleats, which becomes especially important as the field conditions get slicker. I would strongly encourage everyone to have cleats for Tuesday's game against Greenwood so the boys can have better traction and feel more comfortable making cuts and changes of direction.
-- Looking ahead to Thursday, we will continue building on our defensive foundation by introducing more Cover 3 and Cover 4 concepts alongside Cover 2. The goal is not to overcomplicate things, but to give the boys a better understanding of how to defend different spaces and game situations.
-- There were plenty of opportunities in the UCC game where a small execution detail could have changed the result, including plays near the Red Zone and goal line. Those are the moments we can learn from now and continue improving as the boys develop from U14 into the high school years.
-- Overall, it was a successful game day with a strong win in the first game and a very competitive second game that came down to the final stretch. The boys are building something together, and the more we continue to work on these small details, the more confident and effective they will become as a group.
