The York School 2024/25 Year in Review - Music at York: Next Generation Jazz Festival
The goal of The York School’s IB Music program is to foster a lifelong appreciation for music in its many forms. Students from JK to Grade 12 embrace meaningful opportunities to develop their vocal and instrumental skills, explore the connections between music and identity, immerse themselves in cross-cultural learning, and perform for their family members and friends.
We’re excited to share some of the unique-to-York learning experiences that our passionate faculty members led during the 2024-25 school year.
Members of the TYS Quartet (Daniel Tsao ‘25, Bruce English 25, Lily Cohen ‘26 and Max Safir ‘26) had a great experience participating in the Next Generation Jazz Festival, hosted by Humber Polytechnic. The festival gave our students an opportunity to enjoy the talents of ensembles from other schools, perform for a new audience and receive expert feedback from an adjudicator who is a member of Humber’s Music faculty. The TYS Quartet played three pieces that showcased their jazz improvisation skills. Their performance achieved a gold standard and earned them a spot at MusicFest Canada, the country’s largest educational music convention.
