York student Zach W. '26 placed second overall in the English-Speaking Union International Public Speaking Competition
We are incredibly proud to share that Zach W. '26 recently represented Canada in the English-Speaking Union’s prestigious International Public Speaking Competition, held in London, England. After advancing through two national qualifying rounds, Zach earned the honour of competing against students from 41 countries—an inspiring showcase of global talent and youth voice.
The English-Speaking Union (ESU), founded over a century ago, promotes dialogue and understanding through the English language. Its mission has long been to empower young people with the communication skills to advocate for positive change in their communities and beyond.
This year’s competition brought together finalists from around the world. Zach delivered his speech in the historic theatre of the Royal Institution—an iconic venue known for centuries of scientific discovery and public lectures. Surrounded by students, educators, and international judges, Zach impressed the audience with his thoughtful, poised, and distinctly Canadian delivery.
We are thrilled to announce that Zach was named one of six finalists and placed second overall in the global competition. It was a remarkable achievement and a proud moment for our school and country.
For those interested in watching his performance, a recording of his second, thematically Canadian speech can be viewed here.
Congratulations, Zach, on this outstanding accomplishment!
