The York School’s unique Integrated Canadian Experience (ICE) programme is an innovative combined study of Canadian history, geography, civics and literature undertaken by all Grade 9 students.
Our students uncover the story of Canada and its inhabitants by combining field research with classroom learning, developing observational, inquiry and communication skills. Every experience ICE students undertake is designed to provide first-hand evidence, which students use to guide their investigations and support their evolving ideas about Canada.
Grade 9 ICE exploration of the evolution of Canadian character will culminate in Ottawa this semester where students will consider how the national identity is reflected in our capital. As cultural journalists they will share vlogs to take us on their journeys as the city and our country is explored and celebrated, and sometimes its flaws exposed. In preparation of their trip, students recently went to the Distillery District and St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto to hone their blogging skills and share their initial thoughts on our city's community and history.
Enjoy this sample of their work, and be sure to check back at the end of this term to see a feature vlog from the upcoming Ottawa ICE trip.
