York School student and competitive squash player, Julien Gosset, started at The York School in Grade 11 after taking an interest in Service Learning and the International Baccalaureate programme.
“I had heard great things about The York School and was really interested in being a part of the service learning trip to India in Grade 11,” says Julien.
His experience did not disappoint.
“The India trip was a life changing experience learning about gratitude with very little materialism and some of the needs of developing countries. I hope to return to Global Pathways School one day with the knowledge of economics I hope to learn at university,” he says.
With a very busy squash schedule (approximately 24 hours of his week is dedicated to squash) Julien has found The York School’s connectivity and digital approach has helped facilitate his learning, while allowing him to pursue his squash career.
“Most of the curriculum at The York School is accessible online through Blackboard and other digital resources which has allowed me to keep up while I've been away for tournaments. Because of The York School, I can do school work from anywhere and still travel for competitions,” says Julien.
Balancing competitive sport and academics may be a challenge but Julien has risen to the occasion. In December, he received early acceptance to Harvard University where he will be attending this Fall. He believes that the rigorous IB programme – some of which overlaps with first year university content – has prepared him for what’s to come. He also credits his York School experience:
“The community and the leadership opportunities at The York School have also given me the confidence to take on the challenge of university,” says Julien.
With high school graduation on the horizon, what is Julien looking forward most about next year at Harvard?
“There are thousands of courses offered so I’m looking to exploring new interests,” he says.
