Senior School Laptop Programme

Learning with Laptops - Senior School Laptop Programme
For over two decades, The York School has stood as a leader in innovative technology integration across the curriculum. As one of the first schools in the country to support one-to-one laptops we have learned much along the way. Our programme is designed around three main goals: 1) Maximizing learning time  2) Responsive support experience 3) Rich & engaging learning.  In order to achieve these goals, we have a robust ecosystem of tools and platforms that support the curriculum. Each year we look at the landscape of technology and make strategic recommendations around what student devices will operate best with our programme
Grade 9 - 12 Student Laptop Choices (MAC only for 2020-2021)
New grade 8-11 students enter into our formal student-owned laptop programme. For the 2020-2021 academic year, the York School will only be supporting Mac Laptops and the Apple platform. The reason for this strategic change lies with the uncertainty of our fall opening and how to best support new families & students. Families can purchase any laptop Apple provides or can use a Macbook they currently own (that meets minimum specs). We busy working on a new student onboarding plan that could facilitate the set-up from home. This Mobile Device Management (MDM) is only available for the MAC platform at this time. Students can purchase a new MAC laptop (any model) or use an existing model that meets our minimum recommended specifications.
Which MAC laptop should you choose?
Students can order any model from the Apple Store (education pricing) or bring in a MAC from home (that meets minimum specs - see below). Any laptop that is currently on offer at the Apple Store will work with our programme. We do however recommend upgrading the RAM on any machine to 16GB. Students who anticipate taking Comm Tech in grade 10 or IB Film in Grade 11 & 12 would also benefit from increased hard drive storage. We recommend a minimum of 256GB hard drive space.
What are the minimum laptop specifications you recommend for a pre-owned Mac laptop?
Based on our extensive experience we don’t recommend using any Apple Laptop older than 2017. We are confident that any 2017 Macbook, Macbook Pro or Macbook Air or newer will work with our systems. Most laptops come with Minimum 8GB of RAM. We highly recommend 16 GB of RAM Given the size of our software toolkit, we highly recommend SSD hard drive with a minimum of 256GB free space.
New Student Laptop Orientation:
Under normal circumstances, we invite new families to purchase a laptop over the summer and bring it into the school so that our IT team can set it up. New Students are then invited to a Learning with Laptops Orientation before the start of school. Due to the recent school closure and uncertainty surrounding the start of the 2020-2021 school year we are busy preparing resources so that this same set-up process and orientation can be facilitated at home. As we learn more about how Ontario Schools will be mandated to open and will operate in the fall we will communicate to families by email and by updating this page. Expect some communication from the LIT department on how we will be supporting new students with the on-boarding process in July.
