Senior School Laptop Programme

Students entering the Senior School (9 - 12)
New grade 9 - 12 students can choose from either a school selected Lenovo PC model or any MAC laptop that meets our minimum specifications (see below).

All Lenovo PC's must be purchased through our partner reseller (Horn-IT). PC laptops should be ordered by July 15h so that they can be shipped to the school and processed and prepared in time for our new student laptop orientation on September 3rd, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the York Cafe of our 1320 Yonge Street Middle & Senior School campusThe total price includes a robust "three year accidental damage warrenty" that insures the computer against all types of damage and hardware failure.

MAC laptops should be brought into the school for processing no later than July 18th. We STRONGLY recommend including three year Apple Care when you purchase the laptop in order to insure against any part or hardware failure. At this time Apple Care DOES NOT cover accidental damage.

Apple MacBooks can be purchased either directly from Apple or any 3rd party vendor. MacBooks purchased from Apple need to be brought to the I.T. department to have the York School software toolkit installed. Students will receive their laptops during the Grade 8 - 12 'Learning with Laptops' orientation event currently scheduled for September 3rd, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the York Cafe of our 1320 Yonge Street Middle & Senior School campus

Frequently Asked Questions:

Which laptop should we choose for our child?
Each student comes to The York School with their own set of technology skills and platform comforts. As a school powered by Google Apps for Education, we are able to offer students choice within a set of laptop options that support our academic programme. For students who have previous experience with PCs and the Windows operating system, we recommend that they continue to solidify their skills on that platform. If students are comfortable with the MAC platform or have future aspirations to create digital music or multi-media, then the MAC platform may be the better choice for them. No matter what option students choose, they will all be supported the same way and all our York School software works seamlessly on both platforms.

This year we will be offering new Gr 7 - 12 students the choice of either a school selected Lenovo PC model or any Macbook laptop. Your purchase options are:

Purchase the recommended T490 Lenovo through our partner reseller(the laptop will be shipped directly to the York School IT department and set-up with the school software toolkit. Please make the purchase by July 15th so that it can be delivered and set up.. (Click here to order)
Purchase any MacBook laptop through the Apple Store or any certified Apple vendor and bring it into the school by July 18th for set-up.

Bring in your own MacBook from home that meets our minimum specification by July 18th for set-up.

My child wants to bring a MacBook from home. What are your minimum recommended specs?
In order to use your MAC laptop, it must be wiped and installed with our York School software package. This software is used across our academic programme. In order for it to operate properly we recommend the following minimum specifications:

Age: No more than three years old
Ram: Minimum 8 GB, 16 GB recommended
Storage: Minimum 250 GB. SSD Recommended.

Why do you only offer one brand of PC for students to choose from?
The reason we only support one model of PC is due to our internal support, security and printing policies. Supporting multiple PC vendor models (Dell, Microsoft, Samsung, Acer etc.) can be very challenging for schools given the complexity and ever-changing nature of print drivers, security patches and OS updates that seem to come out on a weekly basis. We are able to maintain a very responsive support experience for our students by sticking to a narrow range of models. When a student brings in a Lenovo with an issue we can service and support it very quickly because we are very familiar with the entire software and hardware profile. This reduces the impact on lost classroom time and ultimately learning. Apple makes things a little easier for us as all the drivers and patches are compatible so long as the computer is updated to the latest Apple operating system.

Why does this Lenovo laptop cost more than other available models?
The Lenovo T490 Ultrabook is a business class model. The price includes not only a manufacturer warranty but also the Lenovo 3-year Accidental Damage Protection Plan that covers all forms of accidental damage. All hardware repairs are done by a certified Lenovo technician and your child will be issued a loaner computer for the duration of the repair. Repairs are typically completed within 3 business days. The I.T. department supports all software issues and there is never any need to take the laptop to any other service depot. Lenovo also guarantees that parts will be available for a minimum of 3 years, meaning that there is no need to upgrade the machine for at least three years. Your child's laptop also comes fully loaded with a specially curated software toolkit that is available for use by your child until they leave the school.

My child has a York School PC laptop passed along from a sibling or friend. Can he/she continue to use it next year?
If your child's PC Lenovo laptop is less than 3 years old it can be used again. Please bring it into the I.T. helpdesk so we can assess it and make a recommendation.
What is the deadline for ordering laptops?
The deadline for ordering a laptop for the 2018-2019 school year is July 15th, 2019. This will guarantee that your child's computer is ready for the New Student Laptop Orientation. All Lenovo laptops must be purchased from our partner reseller, HORN IT . Please click here to place your order.

When will my child receive his/her laptop?
Grade 8- 12 students will receive their laptops on August 30th at our 'Learning with Laptops' student orientation. At this event, students will be trained on how to take care of their laptop and will be on-boarded onto all of our academic software and systems.
Learning with Laptops: September 3rd , 2019 at 1:00 p.m. - 1320 Yonge Street, Middle & Senior School campus
