Student Car Wash Raises Funds for India

Thanks to our community for coming out for the Annual India Car Wash over the weekend! The car wash and bake sale raised $2567.05 for Global Pathways School in India where a group of Grade 11 York School students and faculty will be volunteering this March.

A group of York School staff and students spent this past Saturday at our Junior School campus, washing cars and selling baked goods on the street. This annual car wash and bake sale is in support of the Global Pathways School in India, where many of our Grade 11s – past, present and future – spend time volunteering. This Saturday, our students collected $2567.05 which they will taking with them on their trip to Global Pathways School in March.

The Global Pathways School (GPS) was started by the York School’s founder, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots and former Junior School Head, Barbara Galbraith. The school, which opened in June of 2009, is a kindergarten to Grade 2 English-based school. Seventy-five percent of the school’s attendees are from a nearby, low-income settlement. The mission of the school is to provide a path to a better future through education. Find out more about GPS here.

Each year, two groups of Grade 11 York School students spend their March Break at Global Pathways School (GPS). While there, students work alongside staff at GPS, assisting with childcare, working on construction and maintenance projects, and taking part in various education efforts with the children. The three-week expedition over March break includes excursions to a number of culturally significant sites, and interaction with students from the local International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Chinmaya International Residential School.

The York School’s International Service Expedition to India is a unique leadership and community service opportunity for our students that challenges their world views, and leads to personal growth, greater international understanding, and increased sensitivity to the needs and perspectives of people living in developing regions of the globe.

The India Car Wash is the first of many initiatives that our students will take part in this year to raise funds for GPS. Well done, Grade 11s!
