Wellness Programme

Central to The York School’s approach to education is an appreciation for the importance of supporting the whole child. Academic success is intrinsically tied to social and emotional wellness. Through our robust homeroom and advisor programme in all three divisions, students have the opportunity to nurture meaningful relationships with teachers and peers and explicitly address social/emotional learning and character building.

The middle years are a time of unparalleled growth and change for students. The York School has designed a programme to fully support this time of academic and personal development. In the Middle School, our student wellness team consists of a Middle School Counsellor, a Middle School Learning Strategist, a Director of Student Wellness and whole school Social Worker. The wellness team works with individual students, parents and faculty to ensure that our students’ unique psychosocial needs are addressed.

Middle School Counsellor
Upon entering the Middle School, students face a range of new challenges. These challenges include academic and psycho-social adjustments. The first line of support to these challenges is the homeroom teacher, however, additional support is offered through the Middle School Counsellor who makes connections with all Middle School students through the homeroom programme and other areas of school life.

Middle School Learning Resource and Strategy Support
We recognize that the Middle School years are a tremendous time of growth and this growth may require new skills and approaches. The Learning Resource Strategist supports students who may need additional support beyond their classroom teacher. The Strategist works as a co-teacher in classes and offers one-one and small group support outside of the classroom.  Learning Resource and Strategy Support may be called on for support directly by families and/or recommended by the teaching faculty.
