York Students attend Diversity and Leadership Conference
The NAIS multi racial, multicultural conference is attended by students from all over the world
For the first time ever, students from The York School attended the NAIS Student Diversity and Leadership Conference. The 5 day virtual conference that took place in December is a multi racial, multicultural conference attended by students from all over the world. Our students, Amber E., Charlotte Y. and Isabel T., learned cross-cultural communication skills and design strategies for social justice and change.
This year’s theme was Believing and Belonging In Our Schools: Reckoning With Injustice, Reconciling With Love.
Some workshops themes that were included were:
Anti-Racist Teaching, Training, and Allyship
Building Capacity: Skills, Competencies, and Research for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice
Leadership and Management for Equity and Inclusion
Racial and Social Justice and Activism: From the Classroom to the Community
Self-Efficacy and Empowerment: Mind, Body, Spirit
In parallel, 5 teachers - Shelley G., Sean R., Noelyn S., Liz M., and Sara A. attended the National Association for Independent School People of Color Conference.
The school hopes to continue to send students and teachers to this conference every year as it allows our community to continue moving DEI work forward with our staff, students and parents. It gives us the capacity to be better. The opportunity to attend the conference was supported with funds from the Heads Initiative provided by generous parents and staff.
