Academic success is intrinsically tied to social and emotional wellbeing. At the Junior School, we are committed to creating a safe space where our students can acquire the social-emotional skills and strategies they need to achieve balance in today’s fast-paced and turbulent world. An appreciation for the importance of supporting the whole child is central to The York School’s approach to education.
Through our robust homeroom and advisor program, students have the opportunity to nurture meaningful relationships with teachers and peers, and engage in explicit social-emotional learning. Our Student Wellbeing team is available to work with individual students, parents and faculty to ensure that our learners' unique psychosocial needs are addressed.
Junior School Counsellor
In our Junior School, a teacher counsellor works with teachers, students and parents on social and emotional well-being. In collaboration with classroom teachers, and guided by the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence’s RULER approach, the counsellor creates and delivers a curriculum for social and emotional wellbeing from JK to Grade 5.
Our goal is to ensure that all York School students are given the support they need to achieve their personal best. Individual attention and small class sizes help identify academic challenges and offer students the support they require. We offer a range of learning support interventions, depending upon the particular needs of the student. Our learning strategists support students who may need additional intervention beyond the classroom teacher. The learning strategists work as co-teachers in classes and also offer one-on-one and small group support outside of the classroom. If students have identified learning exceptionalities, the learning strategists will create learning plans that identify their strengths and challenges, and recommend interventions and accommodations. Teachers may recommend learning strategy support for students; parents can also request support for their child. Curricular modifications are not provided.
