Student Wellness

Academic success is intrinsically tied to social and emotional wellness. At the Junior School, we are committed to providing our students with a safe space to acquire the practical life skills needed to achieve balance in today’s fast-paced and turbulent world.

Through our homeroom programme, students have the opportunity to nurture meaningful relationships with teachers and peers. Our student wellness team is available to work with individual students, parents and faculty to ensure that our students’ unique psychosocial needs are addressed.

Junior School Counsellor

Amy Faba is the Junior School Counsellor who works with teachers, students and parents on social and emotional well-being within the Junior School. Along with classroom teachers, Amy creates and delivers a curriculum for social and emotional wellness from JK to Grade 5.

Support Services

All York School students are given the means to achieve their personal best. Individual attention, small class sizes and our focus on the whole child help us to identify exceptional children and offer them the support they need to excel. The York School offers several services including one-on-one and/or small group remediation and/or extension, individual or small-group instruction, curriculum accommodations, short-term and long-term goal setting.

Kindness - Our Essential Agreement

There is a school-wide initiative to cultivate a culture of kindness in our community and an essential agreement that guides its implementation. Our objective is to foster a heightened sense of appreciation and gratitude. We focus attention on developing positive intent, kind actions, kind words and good manners in all aspects of school life – in the hallways, stairwells, cafeteria, playground and in interactions with adults and peers.

Mindfulness

Throughout the year, we practice teacher-led and student-led Mindfulness techniques in the classroom and at our weekly assemblies. In this fast-paced age of technology and busy schedules, helping students more closely attend to themselves and the things around them can improve focus, increase awareness, and build resilience. Mindfulness sessions concentrate on movement, facial expressions, feelings of gratitude, kindness and friendship.
