The York School’s growth over the past 50+ years is a tribute to the dedication of the faculty, administration and the many families who have brought the school’s vision to life.
Since its origin as a Montessori-based nursery school, The York School has valued inquiry-based learning and positioned students as active participants in their own development. This commitment endures today.
Founded in 1965 by Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots, the school was established to meet a need for high-quality preschool education within a caring community. In 1978, The Lower School was founded and grew rapidly with the first Grade 8 class graduating in 1985.
The Upper School opened in 1995, and in 1998 The York School was authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma School. The “Home of Our Own” campaign secured a new site for The York School at 1320 Yonge Street, establishing itself as a leading independent school with a distinctly urban feel.
In 2003-2004, The York School was accredited to offer the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP, including EYP) and in 2005-2006, the school was accredited to offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), thus becoming the first school in Canada accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum from kindergarten to university entrance and earn the title of an IB World School.
Driven by our commitment to innovation, the community rallied together in 2010 to build the new Junior School campus at 1639 Yonge Street. Housing JK to Grade 5, this contemporary, flexible learning space reflects our adaptable and collaborative approach to learning.
In 2017, The York School will open the doors to a newly renovated Middle and Senior School at 1320 Yonge Street. The newly designed building features state-of-the-art classrooms and science labs, a wellness centre, a design tech lab, an athletic centre, a York Cafe and more.
The York School is one of Canada’s top independent schools. Our community continues to dream of a better tomorrow and actively pursues new and exciting opportunities for growth and expansion that will support and inspire our students to take on the world.
Innovation is our tradition.
