Not all learning takes place in our classrooms. At York, we get closer to nature at Camp Oochigeas, our outdoor campus located north of Toronto in Muskoka. Whether it's team work, community service or skill building, we are committed to educating the whole child. Besides, it's fun.
Northern Exposure
Students as young as grade 4 learn new skills at Camp Oochigeas. From cooperative games to dockside reflection, experiences at camp are as varied and individual as our students are. The possibilities are boundless – they can be as unique as a field study discovery or as simple as some early morning solitude. It's all part of a larger plan to expose our students to learning in the great outdoors.
Thanks to our Go-Go Gala '05 guests and sponsors, we now have a visible presence at Camp Oochigeas, complete with signage and new supplies. Winter trekking is steps easier with a new class set of snowshoes; maps and resource books in our new Outdoor Resource library will help us blaze trails in many new directions.
Outers Club
Some of our senior students belong to our Outers Club. They plan expeditions to provincial parks where they hike, winter camp, canoe and kayak long weekends away in fall, winter and spring. Club activities help them achieve their Duke of Edinburgh or IB Diploma Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) goals.
