The rollercoaster. To a historian, it's a Russian ice slide. To an engineering design team, it's a world-class thrill ride. To a child, it's a scream. To our grades 7 to 10 students, it's all of these and more. Simply because they look at things from every possible angle.
It's the time when our students begin to look through many different lenses to connect what they learn with the wider world. It's key to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). And key to adolescence, when our students have more questions than ever.
With MYP, we want our students to become more independent and responsible. And to love learning. We do that by combining knowledge, skills, experience and critical thinking in a way that challenges and engages them. Whether they're helping a young reader sound out new words or putting a cultural twist on dance, it's about compassion and active learning.
In grades 7 to 10, our students enjoy a well-rounded curriculum: language, humanities, technology, mathematics, arts, sciences, and physical education. With international perspectives and standards. Areas of Interaction weave these subjects together and frame key questions for our students to reflect on.
Areas of Interaction and Key Questions
| Approaches to Learning |
How can I learn best? |
| Community and Service |
How can I be an informed and active York School student and global citizen? How can I contribute to the communities in which I live? |
| Environment |
How can I take responsibility for the environment? |
| Health and Social Education |
How can I lead a full and balanced life? |
| Homo Faber |
How has human creativity shaped the world we live in? |
In grade 10, MYP students choose a subject that interests them most, and create a personal project that connects academic subjects and Areas of Interaction. The personal project takes many shapes and forms, from a quilt about extended family, to a movie about Bollywood, to a promotional short about a local organization that helps the homeless move to independent living.
The MYP is the middle stage in an IB education and links the Primary Years Programme (PYP) with the Diploma Programme.
Our school has been fully accredited to offer the MYP since 2005. We are now the first school in Canada to offer an accredited IB programme at all levels.
