The York School began as a small preschool with 36 small children who asked big questions. In 41 years, that hasn't changed. It may seem like child's play, but it really is about asking big questions. And nurturing a small child's curiosity and confidence.
What has changed in four decades is the playground. It's much bigger. In fact, it's global. That's why we introduce our youngest students in Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten to inquiry-based learning as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). It's the first step in an international education that begins at age four and lasts a lifetime.
Our curriculum also complements Montessori's inquiry and skill building through hands-on experiential learning, something for which York has been known for over 40 years.
Throughout the Early Years, our teachers:
- Encourage big questions in PYP units of inquiry.
- Adopt different learning styles to meet the needs of every child.
- Introduce students to the global playground through international curriculum.
- Stress the importance of character.
- Allow for learning alone and with others.
- Help our students connect the dots between different subjects.
Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The PYP is designed for three- to 12-year-olds to develop the whole child, and meet their academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. For our York students, PYP means guided inquiry; learning to ask burning questions. Questions that help them explore language, social studies, mathematics, science and technology, arts, and social and physical education. Questions that help them learn about the world, in and out of the classroom.
Our curriculum revolves around six main PYP themes.
| Who we are |
|
Where we are in time and place |
| How we express ourselves |
|
How the world works |
| How we organize ourselves |
| Sharing the planet |
