Keystrokes and clicks. That's how our primary students in grades 1, 2 and 3 begin learning about technology. Technology that is key to helping them become lifelong learners in our global society.
At York, we give our students the tools they need to learn essential computer skills – wireless laptops for students in grades 3 to 12, and desktops in libraries – all connected to our school network and to the Internet.
As early as grade 3, our students begin building a strong foundation in keyboarding, and use those skills to research using Internet and curriculum-based resources. From word processing to mind maps to multimedia presentations, computers are key across the board.
Learning with Laptops
We've been a laptop school for five years, and our grades 7-12 students purchase a school-selected laptop to study at school and at home. In September 2005, we brought laptop learning to our grades 3-6 classrooms.
Laptops in the classroom mean more interactive learning, student motivation, collaboration, team work and critical thinking. Our students actively explore, research and analyze information together and at their own pace, with teachers as guides and facilitators.
For students in grades 7 to 12, laptops are critical to research, communication and presentation. To connect with each other and with faculty, our students in grade 4 and above have e-mail. Blackboard is the course management system we use to post information and homework, and we use interactive whiteboard technology, multimedia equipment and computerized probes in class.

We ask all of our students to use the information in the Learning with Laptops brochure as a guideline, and to follow our Acceptable Use Policy.
